ELEMENTS OF FIGHTING

In combat it is important to control the distance and position of an opponent. This can prevent the opponent from reaching you. In Karate the student develops a powerful kick and punch but fail to develop the necessary skills and abilities to apply them.

Footwork is an area that is neglected and is crucial in producing power. When training it is important to close up all the openings. An opening allows your opponent to attack you without any consequences to himself. Openings are always changing. If you move you change the position around you so you naturally close up some space and open up others. this also holds true for your opponent.

It is like a game of chess any opening you leave uncovered you allow your opponent to exploit. You must first use your mind to be aware of the possible openings and then use your eyes to see the openings. The opening is a position which is unguarded. If you see the opening then it is no longer unguarded. However you can make your opponent think you have not seen a particular opening and if he enters you then take advantage of his situation.

He now, in turn, has left you an opening to exploit. The key is to use your mind like a very fast computer that can calculate all the parameters of any given situation. When training in Karate at an advanced level you are trying to devise strategies of survival in the face of obstacles. If you create space you need to take advantage of it, if you don't your opponent will. When you hit it must be quick and precise. You have to hit very fast, hard and with power.

My instructor used to say, "Attack where he is unprepared and you are not expected. When your opponent advances, absorb him, when he stops attack him and if he retreats follow him".
